Unable to connect to the Synchronization Service error when you try to open Miisclient.exe

Problem

When you try to open Miisclient.exe , you get the following error message:
Unable to connect to the Synchronization Service.

Some possible reasons are:

1) The service is not started

2) Your account is not a member of a required security group.

See the Synchronization Service documentation details.

Cause:

The Forefront synchronization service user (Current User/You logged in with) do not have access rights in the required permission groups. In my case, this issue came because i restarted the server and Forefront Identity Manager Synchronization Service was stopped so i started this service.

Solution

It is a two step solution,

Step 1

You need to make sure your user account is member of FIMSyncBrowse, FIMSyncJoiners, FIMSyncOperators

Step 2

There are 2 windows services that are related to Forefront Identity Manager,
  1. Forefront Identity Manager Service
  2. Forefront Identity Manager Synchronization Service

These services need to be started before you start using the Forefront Identity Manager client! You should start these services from the windows services MMC snap-in.
